The Environmental Protection Agency is encouraging people who receive digital-only broadcasting to consider extending the life of analog TV sets by buying converter boxes.
The digital TV transition does not officially begin until February 2009 in most places, but on Monday, Wilmington, N.C., was the first city in the nation to switch.
Connecting an analog TV, which receives free broadcasts through antennas, would enable digital reception, the EPA said. For consumers who buy a new TV, EPA recommends purchasing Energy Star-qualified sets and recycling unwanted TVs.
